Patient’s Rights
I have the right:
- To know and understand these rights
- Receive treatment without discrimination as to race, sexuality, class, education, religion, lifestyle or physical ability, disability, sexual orientation.
- To be treated with respect and dignity, for all my needs, (natural, emotional, social, spiritual, psychological), to be taken seriously and be satisfied, regardless of the prognosis that I get.
- I know about my situation, I have cancer! I should be told in a certain sensitive way and I want to take part in all the decisions regarding my treatment, through honest and informative conversations with specialists.
- Receive complete information about your diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. I want to have full knowledge regarding the treatment options, the advantages and drawbacks of the treatment and any side effects and dangers that I will face.
- Be able to get a second opinion, deny a treatment or use complimentary treatment options.
- To have my welfare needs recognized.
- I should not be faced with unemployment, I should be accepted back to work, should be promoted depending on my capabilities and experience. My illness should never be a factor.
- I should have access to information regarding services, group support,
self-support, and anyone that can be useful to me.
- I should be supported and helped to accept my illness. My family and friends should receive support as well.
- A no smoking room.
In June 2002, during the European Week against Cancer, ECL’s (European Cancer League) General Assembly adopted a joint declaration on patients’ rights. It covered the following:
- Right to medical care and treatment
- Right to information
- Right to self-determination
- Right to confidentiality and privacy
- Right to social support
- Patients’ responsibilities
- Complaints
- Application
Patient’s Responsibilities
- Provide accurate and complete information about your past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications, and other matters related to your health.
- Tell your physician or nurse if you do not understand your treatment.
- Inform your physician or nurse if there is a change in your condition or if problems arise during your treatment.
